CommPort Settings for the SmartLink Module

Description:
Many newer laptop computers with built-in Serial Ports have problems communicating with the SmartLink module.  These problems can often be reduced or eliminated by modifying the Comm Port settings on the Serial Port connected to the SmartLink Module.

Solution:

IMPORTANT:

The procedure described below is intended for PC's with a built-in serial port.  If you are using a PCMCIA or USB-Serial adapter card, the procedure will most likely will be different.

Windows XP & 2000:

1. Open the Control Panel (Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel).

2. Double-Click on System.

3. Select the Hardware tab in the System Properties window.

4. Click on the Device Manager... button.

5. Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) tree by clicking the plus sign.

6. Double-Click on Communications Port (COM1).

7. Select the Port Settings tab in the properties window.

8. Click on the Advanced... button.

9. Make sure the Use FIFO buffers box is checked and then set the Receive Buffer to Low(1) as shown above.  No changes are necessary to the Transmit Buffer.

10. Select the OK button and Restart Windows.  The port settings will not change until Windows has been restarted.

Windows 95/98/ME:

1. Open the Control Panel (Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel).

2. Double-Click on System.

3. Select the Device Manager tab in the System Properties window.

4. Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) tree by clicking the plus sign.

5. Double-Click on Communications Port (COM1).

6. Select the Port Settings tab in the properties window.

7. Click on the Advanced... button.

8. Make sure the Use FIFO buffers box is checked and then set the Receive Buffer to Low.  No changes are necessary to the Transmit Buffer.

9. Select the OK button and Restart Windows.  The port settings will not change until Windows has been restarted.

Windows NT:

1. Open the Control Panel (Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel).

2. Double-Click on Ports.

3. Select the communications port you wish to change.

4. Click on the Settings... button.

5. Click on the Advanced... button.

6. Make sure the Use FIFO buffers box is checked and then set the Receive Buffer to Low.  No changes are necessary to the Transmit Buffer.

7. Select the OK button and Restart Windows.  The port settings will not change until Windows has been restarted.
